Below you will find information about UWTC's Admission Requirements for the daytime MSTC program. If you have any questions regarding these materials or information please contact the academic counselor.

There is a dual admission process for all graduate programs at the UW. MSTC applicants are required to apply to both the TC department and the UW Graduate School. Application materials are available on the TC Application page.

Note: The TC Department will keep your application on file for one year after the application deadline. If you are not accepted, or decline admission, your application materials will be shredded.

Prerequisites

Applicants for TC graduate study must hold a bachelor's degree. Applicants with relevant experience are regularly admitted to the TC graduate program even if their undergraduate coursework was in a different field. To guarantee that all TC graduate students have a basic foundation for graduate level TC courses, we require the following math prerequisite. The course does NOT need to be completed to apply for the program; it can be taken concurrently with degree courses. Credit from this course does not count toward the TC graduate degree requirements. If you have questions regarding how or if your previous coursework satisfies this requirement, please make an appointment with the Graduate Adviser.

  • Math Prerequisite: calculus or an equivalent relevant course such as statistics or logic

Statement of Qualifications, Goals, and Career Objectives

The statement of qualifications, goals, and objectives is an important part of the application portfolio. The admission committee considers content and format when evaluating the statement; it should be no longer than two pages.

Your statement should address:

  • Reasons why you chose TC, and an area of specialty within TC (if you identified a sub-area)
  • How you plan to relate the specialty area to your education and experiences
  • Career benefits you expect from themaster's degree
  • Other matters you think the Department should take into consideration

Letters of Recommendation

Three (3) letters of recommendation are required. These letters should be from people who can judge your capacity to undertake graduate studies, including present or former professors, work supervisors, or clients (in the case of consulting assignments).

An evaluation form must accompany each recommendation. References can either be sent to the department by the recommender, or gathered and sent with your application packet as long as they remain sealed in their original envelope.

Resume

A current resume is required. No specific professional background is required to apply, but relevant professional experience is taken into account in the admission's decision.

Financial Aid/General Information Questionnaire

The Financial Aid/General Information Questionnaire is used to ensure we have all the details relevant to your application.

Official Transcripts

Each applicant must submit official transcripts from each college level (4-year and 2-year) institution attended. To become a part of the application packet, the official transcripts must arrive sealed in their original envelope from the institution that issued them.

Graduate Record Exam (GRE)

Graduate Admissions requires that all applicants take the GRE General Test. The TC Department uses mainly the verbal score of the GRE in evaluating applicants. Since April 1999, the General Test is offered only on computer at locations around the world. These test scores are mailed to you and the designated institutions 10-15 days after the test date.

In filling out the GRE application, use 4854 (University of Washington) under "Score Report Recipients" and 5199 (TC) for the department code. The University of Washington accepts scores sent directly from ETS in paper roster, disk, or tape format. Official score reports should be sent to UW Graduate Admissions. GRE scores must be no more than five years old.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Applicants whose native language is not English must obtain a satisfactory score on the TOEFL unless they have a university degree from an institution in an English-speaking country. This requirement also applies to immigrant and permanent resident applicants.

Like the GRE, the TOEFL is given worldwide at set dates each year at most major universities and many U.S. Consulates and Embassies abroad. Official score reports from the TOEFL should be sent to the UW Graduate Admissions. The TC Department requires that TOEFL scores be no more than two years old.

Upon notification of acceptance to the TC Master's Program from the Graduate School, the applicant will be asked to pay a $100 deposit. This payment secures your spot at the UW and will be applied to your tuition.

New TC students will be invited to an orientation meeting. Detailed information will be mailed to you about this and any other events hosted by the Department.

New students generally have a set schedule in autumn quarter, which is outlined in their welcome letter. If new students have questions about this schedule, or would like to change the schedule, contact the Graduate Adviser.
